Beyond our Boundaries…Spring ‘23
When I was young, I walked to school the same way every day. I knew all the trees, the old snake hunter, the cat who would scratch if I tried to pat him, and the bush that would hide the sticks I collected along the way. Fearing that I would get lost, I didn’t change my route.
Until one day I did.
I saw different things, met new cats, passed my friend Sam’s house, and still got to school. What a different day it was!
Artwork can be like that --- We can get sort of stuck in one way of doing what we do, not altering our route.
I paint in watercolor (wet on wet) and acrylic. With this challenge, I changed my route.
Change can be scary for me. But a challenge can also be a motivator. I did a watercolor with tissue paper for the base. I did a watercolor, dry on dry, a rendition of a Monet painting.
Well, what a change! I now find that these changes are no longer new, different or scary…. But have become other skills to interpret what I am seeing or thinking of. What have you felt in this challenge? Kate Bowditch

"Hops and Juniper Gourds"
Wood burning and painting by Ana Li Gresham
Pine needle weaving by Lyn Lewis
"This is a new medium for me, I've never wood burned on a gourd before. It was a fun experiment! Lyn did an amazing job on the top weaving." - Ana Li
View at Oak Hollow February 27-March 24th
"Only Footsteps"
8 x 24 Mixed Media
by Ana Li Gresham
"This is another experiment in mixed media. I also tried out layering the wood so that the footprint is sunken down into the canvas." - Ana Li
View at Oak Hollow February 27-March 24th.
"Arrowleaf Balsalmroot"
16 x 20 Mixed Media
by Ana Li Gresham
"I've started experimenting with using three mediums: drawing with pencil, acrylic painting and wood burning. This is the first piece I tried that method out on." - Ana Li
View at Oak Hollow February 27-March 24th.
"A Very Bright Night"
16 x 20 Oil Painting
$550
by Bill Beam
It is outside my boundaries as seldom do painters try to paint the aurora in oil. It is not easy and I had to do a ton of research just to feel comfortable to try it.
"The Birch Field"
16 x 20 Acrylic Painting
$450
by Bill Beam
Acrylic is truly not my medium of choice. I’ve studied oil painting for my entire career, six years, and only painted a very small handful of acrylic paintings, not even a handful as I believe this is my third attempt in the medium.
"His '32 Ford"
24 x 36 Acrylic painting
This is my first car painting and was also a challenge to depict a gravel surface.
"Still Life in Red, White and Blue"
16 x 22 Watercolor and Ink
This was my first piece that combined watercolor and ink. The plate is colored ink in a pointillism technique. It was also a challenge to indicate lace without painting every lace hole.
"Temptation"
11 x 14 Colored Pencil
This work is a colored pencil piece where I tried impressing the paper to show fine white lines in the stitching on the jacket. Also was a challenge for me to show hair and frosted cookies.
"Battery Point Lighthouse, Crescent City, CA"
15 x 22 Chalk Pastel and Printmaking
Unframed $500
by Geri Ham
These attached artworks are outside my boundaries because of the media change. I usually work in watercolor these artworks are chalk pastel with some block printmaking also used. I find this switch of media refreshing and enjoy the challenge of pastel.
“Along the Trail to Boulder Cave”
24 x 36 Acrylic
by Joan Eckman
This large format picture is about double the size I normally work on. It was very challenging just because of handling that big of a canvas, and it used a LOT of paint. It was a good experience though and I enjoyed it. This painting is on HOLD for a show in Ellensburg this summer.
“Lost in the Grasses”
6 x 6 Mixed Media Picture
by Joan Eckman
I haven't done much with the subject of vehicles being the focal point, so this was a stretch even though it was still in a landscape setting. Vehicles can bring back so many memories. That is a real positive side to this subject. This picture is on HOLD for a show in Ellensburg this summer.
“Weathered and Worn”
6 x 6 Acrylic
by Joan Eckman
This painting is unusual for me because of the focal point being the vehicle even though it too is within a landscape setting. This picture in on HOLD for a show in Ellensburg this summer.
"A pair of Pears"
5 x 7 Unmatted Watercolor
by Kris Knight
I have been painting exclusively in oils for a number of years. My daughter wanted to learn watercolor and she lives out of town, so we have been zooming together and watching YouTube tutorials trying to learn how to handle the paint and mixing colors. It’s so completely different from oils, I’m struggling and realizing how much I have to learn, and yet enjoying the process.
"Easter Egg Fun"
6 x 8 Unmatted Watercolor
by Kris Knight
Two years ago I signed up for a class titled “Color College” from Marla Baggetta. She used acrylic paint for the demonstrations, so I decided to try acrylics. It was another stretch from painting in oils, however I enjoyed that process as well and plan to do more in the future. I learned so much! The last assignment was this painting of trees, pushing color. So, this is from her demo example. It was fun.
"Colorful Cougar"
24 x 35 Acrylic paint
$300
by Leslie Yamada
This is the largest piece I have ever done. I did the background using a credit card. I saw an artist who had done landscapes with this method and thought I would try it. I was quite pleased with the results!
"Under the Sea"
16 x 20 Oil Painting
Framed $250
by Linda Lee
I'm a realist painter, so abstract is definitely not my preferred subject matter.
"Pink Pansies"
20 x 14 Watercolor
Matted, Framed $450
by Mary Jepsen
This work is out of my comfort zone because of the size
of the painting, done on 300# Arches set up so I could hold the paper
and rotate to get water to flow where I wanted.
"Charcuterie #1"
Watercolor on Wood
20” long + handle 5.5” long x 7.5” wide
For Sale
by Meldra Driscoll
This project was completely outside anything I’ve done before! I hadn’t ever painted with watercolors on wood, done a wine bottle or painted food before. I’m mostly a floral or landscape artist. I learned so much through this painting experience! The Charcuterie Board is coated with five layers of food grade sealer. It is safe for serving food. To clean, wipe with a damp cloth.
"My Happy Place"
Watercolor on Wood
11 x 15 Mixed Media Watercolor Gouache Brusho Acrylic Ink and Micro pen
$350 Unframed
by Meldra Driscoll
I usually use a reference photo I’ve taken when painting landscapes. This time, it all came together as I worked on it, purely from my imagination. I used a couple new tools too - Brusho and a toothpick, and I poured the sky. This could be your Happy Place too!
"Tropicana"
8 x 10 Mixed Media Watercolor and Ink
NFS
by Rosalyn McWatters
"The inspiration for these pieces literally came from outside my boundaries and specifically from the Neon Museum in Las Vegas. The soft colors, the rusty, vintage patinas, the fascinating shapes leaning at interesting angles, all under a gray winter sky...... it had me from the start."
"Beyond the Clouds"
Fluid Art
24" wooden disk with 16" round wooden disk
