Bill left the Navy music program in 1991 After his last of five stints in the Navy. He returned to school to complete his formal music education. Two years at the University of Hawaii then to Tacoma Washington to complete his formal training in music education at Pacific Lutheran University. Graduating in August of 2000 and off to begin working on his graduate degree in January of 2001 from Central Washington University which blossomed into three graduate degrees in music. After college Bill became the Director of Music at Wilson Middle School and worked as assistant director of bands Davis High School. While at Central, Bill met and fell in love with his wife Tammi. Married for over 22 years Tammi is the reason he paints. It was her idea to begin painting five years ago, and for him to finally join the YVAA. Music and the Arts have been Bill’s life for over 50 years, painting for five of those 50 years, which completes the artistic trifecta, vocal, instrumental, and artistic performance. Now, the sky really is the limit.

My first attempt at painting came at 3 years old when my mother put a small canvas board in front of me along with two tubes of her well-worn Grumbacher oils, and directed me to ‘paint an apple’, which I did. I made only one other attempt at oil painting in my youth, not at all successful and never finished. Years later, I briefly studied graphic design at Central Washington University but only completed one year of study before the lure of an immediate job and a regular paycheck enticed me to leave school. Over the years I worked in a variety of business environments including legal and architectural, and finally found my niche in funeral service. After leaving college, I didn’t pick up paints and a brush for more than 40 years.
In 2016, a request from my daughter to paint a landscape for her baby’s nursery convinced me to purchase enough paint and few brushes to get the job done and rekindled my interest in painting. I really enjoyed the process and also finished a few other paintings for family members.
Since retiring in 2020, painting has become the prime focus of much of my time and energy. It is the activity that calms my brain and entertains my thoughts and I’m finding a lot of satisfaction in it. I am especially drawn to sunlight—particularly depicting its effect on almost any scene or subject. The central Washington steppe, dry hills and contrasting waterways are my favorite subjects.

Where I live (now): Yakima, WA
Growing up in Boise, Idaho in the 50’s gave me great freedom to roam the landscape of my life, both downtown and in the sandy hills surrounding it. Since then, I have preferred to be outside, drinking in the weather, the views, and the animals who live there.
I have photographed and drawn images from all my travels around the US, South America, China, and the British Isles.
For 30+ years Snohomish County was my home. By 2017, Grandchildren and sunlit vistas called me to retire and move to Yakima.
Although I have drawn and created things all my life, it is in this time, now, that I have truly exploring the wonders of painting.
The major developing themes to my work, both in acrylic and watercolor:
· Landscapes and sky
· The small inhabitants of that land and sky
· Old architecture of the are

I am a naturalist and artist who loves to explore the beauty of nature through the medium of watercolors.
One of my favorite subjects is the Central Washington shrub steppe landscape. I delight in the vivid colors, darks and lights of the skies, rolling hills, Ponderosa pines and grasslands and continue to experiment on how best to capture this unique landscape in watercolor.

Outdoor activities and art have always been a large part of my life. After retiring in 2007,
I began pursuing my art endeavors further. Pencil drawings and watercolor progressed to acrylic paintings. A spinal cord injury changed the way I interact physically with the outdoors, but Plein Air painting keeps me outside where I can enjoy both my passions.
