Abstract Art: Colors in Motion
“What is it?”, my grandmother asked as we stood in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. We were in front of a large canvas with about five colors on it. All big. All bold.
“There is no 'it'," I answered with the egotistic knowledge of the young.
Without thinking, however, I had nailed it. Now, at 77, I accept the lack of the “it” in abstract painting that had confused me for so long.
There is no need for an “it” or a “thing." Abstract painting is, to me, about motion, color, action, and emotion. For those pushing against the reality of the abstract painting in front of them, just breathe, and breathe again. Let the colors, or the shapes, or the lines, tickle something deep inside you.
Now, had my grandmother asked, “What is it?," I might say, “It’s the wind, when it is still, grandmother, when it is still.”
