We do not “see” all that is there. We think we do, and frequently act on that mistake, but what else is there that we have missed?
This collection of works is about just that… “seeing” one thing, then a blink, and something else is there.
The context changes, the distance shifts, the light turns on…. There are so many ways to shift our view!
Come, see what the artist sees as you alter your perception of things that you “saw” a moment ago. You just might be amazed at what happens when you blink.

"Moonlit Yakima River Canyon"

by Joan Eckman
Moonlit Yakima River Canyon” is a framed 12" X 12" and will be available at the Clymer Museum and Gallery in Ellensburg for $430.00 beginning June 10th.
The first image; "Yakima River Canyon" was done some time back from a high vantage point along the river. It was done in the fall and the perspective of looking down on the river cuts out the sky but allowed for the haze of implied warm sun rays to break through. The scene pulled at me with the desire to go down and walk along the river. To enjoy the fall color and the scent of the damp, but warm foliage. It was a typical eastern Washington fall day. Glorious.
The second image; "Moonlit Yakima River Canyon" was from a trip down the river canyon in April. There was still a little hint of snow on top of the canyon hills. The perspective was at a much lower angle and allowed for the cliffs with the moon and sky to create an integral part of setting the stage and feeling of the painting. The moon creates a silvery and somewhat greenish cast over everything which changes color, but which seem to still be apparent. The reflection of the moon on the water added some much-needed light and almost gave it an ethereal feel, but also seemed to help ground the whole picture. It again made me wish to go for a walk along the river and enjoy the peace and call of adventure which seems to prevail on moonlit nights.
It always amazes me that the same landscape can be seen day after day and yet it will always have something different to catch your attention. Even the fleet passing of a cloud will cast a shadow that can alter the feel of that same landscape, evoking different feelings. The ever-changing beauty will never cease to amaze and delight me.
